Underpants Judo

Today was my last day of judo until school starts up again in the fall. There's just no point in going when it's this hot. I mean, the dojo's pretty nice and has fans, but nobody feels like doing anything, so we all just sit around. And it consumes my entire evening or morning, depending on the day.

Today was so muggy that two of the guys took off their clothes and were jumping around the dojo in their underpants. One guy started taking those off, too, but then his girlfriend hit him and he stopped.

It's pretty muggy here.

"Practical" comes to mind, Thots. At leas the guy remembered to bring his stupid-regulator with him.

LOL...I meant the taking off of EVERYTHING. Down to the underwear would be weird for Judo, even, though, because you have to grab onto the uniform to do the throws and such. I'm not sure what you grab if all your opponent is wearing is undies. LOL.
I DO understand the point of it for the heat/humidity. It's just that the actual practicality doesn't quite equate to the task. Heheh. It makes for a funny visual image, though.

I asked Erica about how to do a throw without the gi to hold on to, and she said basically that you shouldn't practice it without the gi.
Silly, if you ask me.

Is Erica your sensei?

Yeah, I can see the practice in class of not doing that as a general rule, but if you ever actually needed to use Judo in self-defense, one would expect the other person to not be dressed in gi for your throwing convenience.

That's one reason why I always keep my friend around. He does not care much what they are dressed in, unless it's at least nine layers thick.

Only a couple of them know any of the useful judo. The rest have mostly trained for competitions. I think it's sort of assumed that you'll use something else if you want a self-defense form.

And since weapons aren't really culturally correct there for the general public anymore, what would that other thing they are supposed to use be? I guess, actually, being the society they are, they expect that you won't be needing it in the first place? I'm not arguing with you over it, just actually curious.

The meaning of "something else" is clearer if you look at the rest "if you want a self-defense form."
Anyway, I would expect someone to be using something that wasn't specifically formulated not to hurt people, something aimed at defense, instead of PE.

True enough. I was more arguing with them, not you, though, since I see Judo as a self-defense martial art, but yeah, it is more of an "art" I suppose, than a defense strategy, as taught in the class, probably.

Kodokan judo is just not particularly effective as a martial art. The amount of training required to proficiently defend yourself is ludicrous for the amount of effect you get. In addition, it works against only one opponent. Judo's groundwork is very powerful, but is completely useless if you have more than one willful opponent.

Is Kodokan judo what we were learning with Greg? I SHOULD know the answer to that question, but I obviously don't.

I really wanted to learn more of that. I like the throws and the mat-work a lot. I was fascinated with the idea of being able to learn to better utilize what strength I do have, which isn't much. I appreciated that we did discuss some self-defense tactics in that class, though I think it would be great to additionally take a whole class on that subject.

Any recommendations for a martial arts that practices self-defense?

Yes, we were learning traditional judo with Greg. Most places that teach judo will teach Kodokan (traditional) because it's the safest and the most popular. Many other styles exist, and some are more effective, but those are considerably more dangerous.

I was going to answer here, but I ended up writing a two-page paper instead. Check out the new post for my response.
